I try to discover a visual language by acknowledging the communion of time and space, and detecting a union of light and imagination. The simple lines and shapes in my work as a whole contain movements and afterimages of lights. My work also displays inner flows resulting from the relationships between these lights. These relationships were derived from the transparent intersection of the journey of space and light, which endlessly circulates and grows through the interaction with time, light, shadow, and the events surrounding the space. In this fluid space, the light merges, moves, and dissolves. And through these various transformations, the light creates a sort of illusion that forms relationship with new spaces, enabling its meaning to expand and takeoff into a new level.
The recording of these transforming light and space derived from my visual experience. I tried to embody the delicate light soaking through space, colored shadows, and the correlation between spaces linked by lights floating through time and space. As a result, the work as a whole represents a landscape reinterpreted and reestablished through an organic arrangement of spaces.
My work displays the process of spaces transforming into 'poetic moments': they resonate, reflect, bend, and circulate like an echo. When various fragments of spaces connect and reconnect, new relationships form between them. These fragments develop another expanded passage and a new illusion. The developing process is like recollecting memories; we recollect a certain place when transparent afterimages of its memory overlap with each other. In my work, this process is expressed through an overlapping of linkages that is formed within light, color permeating light, shadow, space, space in between, and space created through the interaction with objects.
Although my work started from an imagination sparked by my own process of “looking,” I hope my work could be endlessly reinterpreted and reconnect with the viewers’ individual memories. I wish my work would function as a foundation of sharing each other’s stories and experiences of their own special spaces in mind. -EunHyea Choi
